The Tanzania Association of the Deaf –CHAVITA, Uyui branch has improved the sign language communication in Uyui district following training of parents, leaders and deaf themselves. The training was undertaken between November 2008 and February 2009 with support of Tshs. 4,363,500 from the Foundation for Civil Society. Trainees of sign language appreciated and gained much interest such that they decided to establish a sign language club to be used a means of spreading the knowledge to other people in the community. Several people who participated in the project provided testimonies on how they benefited.  “Although I am deaf, I did not understand well sign language, this situation was contributing to communication barrier between I and other people,” said Pili Athumani from Upuge ward. Community sensitisation and mobilisation efforts undertaken by Hope Empowerment and Development Organisation (HEDO) in Tanga have helped to widen people’s knowledge and decision to take action in addressing health issues. The organisation has received much appreciation and recognition, especially in Muheza district where it has undertaken several campaigns including mother and child health education, voluntary HIV counselling and testing, education on prevention of HIV transmission from mother to child and prevention of HIV infection in general. Also, the organisation has been providing nutritional education to pregnant women, with emphasis on eating balanced diet.   Education on nutrition has largely helped people in district to do away with traditional taboos which were preventing women to eat some kinds of food. Kupunguza Umasikini na Kuboresha Hali za Wananchi (KUKHAWA), an organisation based in Pemba is well determined to end child labour in the society.  The organisation aspires to create a society where children are not used as source of cheap labour. In pursuit of its goal the organization formed Committees in Wete and Chakechake districts to spearhead the fighting against child labour. Formation of those committees was part of implementation of a project dubbed “Facilitating the reduction of Hazardous Child labour”,  supported with Tshs 34,035,170 by the Foundation for Civil Society. The Secretary of the Ole Wete village committee, Sultan Nassor Hamad, says that notable progress has been made after the training on child labour, as conducted by KUKHAWA. A newly established Mtwara FM Community radio raises hopes of people at the grassroots in the Southern zone of Tanzania that their voices can be heard. The radio, which is currently under signal test on 98.6FM, has been established by the Journalists Environment and AIDS Network (JEAN media) through funding from the Foundation for Civil Society under its Medium Grants programme. The Executive Director of JEAN Media, Sango Kipozi has said that the main focus of the radio will be to cover issues concerning people at the grassroots and will involve them in both designing and production of its programmes. Unity in Diversity Foundation (UDF) of Mbeya region is one the civil society organizations which has managed to enable people understand that they are the destiny of their own development. This has been made possible through the training which was conducted by UDF.  UDF aims at enhancing people’s levels of knowledge, mobilising them and facilitating linkages among them. The organisation has also undertaken identification of professionals who are not permanently employed and providing them with more training in the areas of their expertise, thereby facilitating them to contribute their knowledge in development initiatives.
